Thanks Joyce!

Joyce sent us a coconut from her recent trip to Hawaii. The boys had such a blast opening the thing. It took for.ev.er, but they were having fun so who cares. Plus they got to use a pocket knife!! It doesn't get any better than that for these two.

Sid (donning her baseball helmet for protection) gave it a try too. She didn't last very long.

After about an hour we got it open only to find a rotten coconut! While the kids were sad there was no milk to drink, they were still fascinated by it all.

Bummer! After all that effort, there was no treat. But still, the pocketknife thing almost made up for it. :-)

Boys will jump at any chance to use a pocketknife. I remember my dad brought home a coconut once. It was a huge effort to get open, but totally worth it. Yum!

I went to a luau once and those guys make it look SO easy. There must be a trick to it. That stinks that there was no milk to drink but it sure looks like they enjoyed the process.

getting it open looks like the fun part. Sorry there was no treat at the end.

Come on! Nothing tastes better than rotten coconut! Too bad we all don't have our machetes laying around for easy opening when we get one in the mail:)

those things are a bear to open! it looked like it was painted on the outside. if that is the case that coconut was probably sitting on a tourist shop shelf for the past 5 years, hence, the rotten coconut! i think those are more for show than eating! :-) glad you guys had a fun time opening it!

see your kids are hard workers! when you guys come down in april they will probably have fun with reuben and tom working on the farm. that is if there is time for that with brock coming home and all. i can't believe he is already coming home so soon

Kim - I totally remember that coconut and I don't remember whole lot about my childhood so I imagine that it also made a lasting impression with your kids.

Wow - that's a doozy of a run-on sentence.
